CON-CERT

DM pdf

“Concert” is a term derived from the Italian word concerto, its origin in Latin. It is supposed that the Latin words concertātiō (contention, dispution) and consortiō (society, participation) share their etymology with “concert.” In English, the word means not only a public performance of music, but also consensus, cooperation, and harmony. Furthermore, it can function as a verb, like “consent” or “cooperate.” Some English-Japanese dictionaries explain its meaning by dividing it into “con-” (with) and “-cert” (working hard). Is it acceptable only for professional musicians to play music? No, of course not. From a historical perspective, people enjoyed music before the appearance of concerts as a business. In private communities, music lovers assembled and played instruments together. There were no boundaries between performer and audience. +1art is stage left. Stage right, on the other side, is +2. The city in between is the stage of this “con・cert.” A concert is an event in which people do something together (sometimes with contention) regardless of their role as performer or audience.
